For Philadelphia area based singer/songwriter/guitarist, Dylan McGuire, “Another Chapter” is a fitting title to his latest album.
McGuire, who has been a fixture on the regional music scene for years, recently set out to take his career down a different road. The former front man and primary songwriter of Broken Jones, McGuire has seen his share of band changes. Those changes have led him to the present, and his burgeoning career as a maturing songwriter whose songs showcase a driving rock style with strong pop sensibilities.
While in Broken Jones, McGuire had FM airplay on the now-defunct Y100 (Philadelphia), WSTW (Wilmington), KCMU (Seattle), Digital Choice Radio, and 98 Rock (Baltimore). The band regularly played the major clubs in Philadelphia as well as in New York City and Baltimore. They even created a following in Seattle, where they toured and were featured on a local cable live music showcase, 29Live.
Broken Jones became Elroy; and as Elroy was folding, McGuire started writing “Another Chapter.” He started recording the album with his former Elroy band mates, but decided to pursue the album as a solo project with the help of producer/songwriter Derek Chafin.
The result is an album full of pop hooks and songs that combine several of alternative rock’s stylistic touchstones. It also underscores the innate rawness of McGuire’s music that is alternately optimistic and melancholy. Highlights include: “City Lights,” a simple pop-rock song that showcases McGuire’s knack for hooks; the dreamlike “Sleepwalker”; and the dark and energetic “Sullen Girl.”
His current band features Chad Gorn (former Phoenix Trap) on bass, Scott Reichert on guitar, Jeanne Broadwell on vocals and guitar, and Will Alpers on drums. They currently play at top original music venues in the Philadelphia region including The Tin Angel, World Café Live, Brownies 23 East, Chaplin’s Music Café, the (former) Grape Street Pub and others. Tracks from Another Chapter are in regular rotation on 93.7 FM WSTW’s Hometown Heroes program and on HD “Graffiti Radio” and have been played on Radio 104.5 FM (WRFF). McGuire was also nominated as Best Guitarist in the WSTW 2007 “Homey Awards” for area musicians.
